Privacy Policy

Acopodo ("we", "us", "our") is operated by Monoceros Holdings GK, a company registered in Japan. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Acopodo mobile application (the "App"), how we use it, who we share it with, and what rights you have. By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Summary

Acopodo does not ask you to create an account with a name or email address. However, to sync your learning progress and deliver certain features, the App automatically creates an anonymous identifier and stores limited data in Google Firebase. We use Anthropic's Claude API to power the optional AI Sensei tutor, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech for audio pronunciations, and RevenueCat together with Google Play (and in the future, Apple) to manage subscriptions. We do not sell your data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it for any purpose unrelated to operating the App.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Anonymous account identifier

The first time you open the App, we use Firebase Authentication to create an anonymous user ID (a random string). This ID is not linked to your name, email, phone number, or any real-world identity unless you choose to contact us. It is used to store and retrieve your learning progress across sessions and devices on the same install.

2.2 Learning progress and app data

We store the following in Google Cloud Firestore, associated with your anonymous ID:

  • Kanji, vocabulary, and lesson progress (items studied, scores, mistakes, XP, coins).
  • Kanji Quest battle progress and streak data.
  • App preferences such as interface language.
  • Subscription status (which tier, if any, is active) received from RevenueCat.

2.3 AI Sensei conversations

If you use the AI Sensei feature, the Japanese phrases and prompts you generate are sent from the App to our Google Cloud Functions backend, which then calls Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses. Our backend writes short diagnostic log entries (including your anonymous user ID, the feature called, and rate-limit counters) to Google Cloud Logging. These logs are retained for up to 30 days and are used for debugging, abuse prevention, and cost monitoring. We do not use AI Sensei conversations to train any model.

2.4 Audio generation

When the App needs to generate native pronunciations, text is sent to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech via our backend, and the resulting audio is returned to the App. The input text is not linked to your identity beyond the anonymous ID used for rate limiting.

2.5 Subscriptions and payments

All payments are processed by Google Play (and, in the future, Apple). We never see or store your credit card number, full name, or billing address. We use RevenueCat as a subscription management layer; RevenueCat receives your anonymous ID, the product you purchased, the store's anonymous purchase token, country code, and receipt data so that it can tell our backend whether your subscription is active.

2.6 Integrity signals (App Check)

We use Firebase App Check to verify that requests to our backend come from a genuine, unmodified copy of the App. App Check uses Google Play Integrity and may collect device integrity signals as described in Google's documentation. These signals are used only to protect our backend from abuse.

2.7 Information you send us directly

If you email us at info@monoceros-holdings.com, we receive your email address and the content of your message, and we keep it for as long as needed to respond to you and maintain a record of the correspondence.

3. Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not ask for your real name, date of birth, phone number, or postal address.
  • We do not access your camera roll, contacts, calendar, or location.
  • Camera OCR, if used, is processed entirely on your device — no images leave the device.
  • We do not run third-party advertising SDKs, and we do not use tracking cookies or cross-app identifiers for advertising.

4. How We Use Information

  • To deliver core features (lessons, kanji, quests, writing practice, AI Sensei, audio).
  • To save and sync your learning progress across sessions.
  • To verify your subscription status and unlock premium features.
  • To enforce fair-use rate limits on AI features and prevent abuse.
  • To diagnose crashes and errors and improve the App.
  • To respond to your support requests.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell personal information, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.

5. Service Providers We Share Data With

We use the following processors. Each receives only the data needed to perform its function, under a data processing agreement where applicable.

  • Google / Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Cloud Functions, Cloud Storage, App Check, Cloud Logging, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech). See Firebase Privacy and Google Privacy Policy.
  • Anthropic, PBC (Claude API for AI Sensei responses). See Anthropic's Privacy Policy. Anthropic has stated that API inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default.
  • RevenueCat, Inc. (subscription management). See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
  • Google Play (and in the future, Apple App Store) for payment processing. See Google and Apple.

6. International Data Transfers

Acopodo is operated from Japan, but the service providers listed above may store and process data in the United States, the European Union, and other countries. By using the App, you understand that your data may be transferred internationally. Our providers maintain safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for cross-border transfers where required.

7. Data Retention

  • Learning progress and preferences are kept for as long as the anonymous account is active.
  • AI Sensei backend logs are kept for up to 30 days, then automatically deleted.
  • Subscription records are retained as long as required by app store and tax/accounting law.
  • Support emails are kept for up to 24 months after the last correspondence.

If you want us to delete the data associated with your anonymous ID, email info@monoceros-holdings.com from the device where the App is installed and include the anonymous ID shown in the App's settings screen.

8. Your Rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you;
  • request correction of inaccurate data;
  • request deletion of your data;
  • object to or restrict certain processing;
  • request portability of your data;
  • lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

The legal bases we rely on are: performance of the contract (delivering the App and your subscription), our legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, product improvement), consent (where required by local law), and compliance with legal obligations. 9. Your Rights (California — CCPA/CPRA)

California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request deletion, to correct inaccurate information, and to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. Acopodo does not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA. To exercise your rights, contact info@monoceros-holdings.com.

10. Children's Privacy

Acopodo is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards, including TLS in transit, access controls on Firebase, App Check integrity verification, and server-side enforcement of subscription entitlements. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect the limited data we hold.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced in the App or on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the App after the effective date of the updated policy constitutes acceptance.
